Pochade box build

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

I've recently spent a few days building myself a little pochade box for painting en plein air using recycled Jarrah floorboard with Camphor panels (it smells great !).

Here it is before the wax polish I put on it,
It will be able to hold four 10x12 inch panels & mounts on a normal camera tripod (which had better arrive monday, I want to start using it!)

A photo of the construction of an artists painting boxA coat of wax polish, and the leather strap added, time to figure out how to make the latch that holds it closed..

Below shows me first figuring out the placement of the latch, then some filing of a little brass plate to shape.

And finally the support arms to stop the lid from falling backwards when it's open - I'm using the prototype light-holders from my big easel.

All put together and eady to go !!
I've added a tripod mount so I can take it out, we tried yesterday but it was overcast all morning then really windy all afternoon, better luck tomorrow...

Watercolour set

My artist friend Marion has recently returned from France and brought me a gift - a Sennelier "Aqua-mini" watercolour set, here is it in action, my first time using it, now I have no excuse - I have to learn how to use watercolours !

A quick little pen drawing then watercolour of my favourite street performers that play blues out the front of my studio every saturday.

Merci beaucoup Marion !

Freshwater Bay – Mosman park commission

Here's a commission piece that I've been working on lately, a private schools' gift to their retiring Principal.

It's nice to be doing a piece at night in the studio at home - a bit different to the painting time in the busy Fremantle studio!

Painting panel test

Some artists materials on a work bench

Trying out some of the new paints and one of the dry panels, not as slippery as I thought, actually it's quite absorbent probably because of the oil prime.

I've coated a couple more with a layer of red oxide and some medium, we'll see if that makes any difference once they're dry
First try with Michael Harding Prussian Blue (nice) and Old Holland Green Earth (nice), but wow - the Williamsburg Nickel Yellow is great !

A photo of some artists panels ready to paint on

I've recently found a source of Aluminium Composite Panel and just prepared a few ready to paint on - should be an interesting experiment. I'm assuming it's going to be a bit more slippery than working on canvas board (obviously), even with the added tooth of the oil prime
I've done a fair bit of research and it looks like this painting surface is completely dimensionally stable - it's not going to warp, move, crack etc

More oil paint..

A photo of some Artists oil paintI just received some new paints from an online order I did recently, not much this time but I'm pretty excited about one colour - Nickel Yellow from Williamsburg handmade Oil Colors

It's exactly what I'd wanted it to be, I hope I don't get addicted to it cause it ain't cheap. My first try with PY 53 - Nickel Titanate, a really nice highly pigmented lemon yellow.

I also grabbed a couple tubes of Lukas 1862 Titanium white - my favourite white at the moment,
Michael Harding Ivory black and Manganese violet (cause I'm running out) and finally the tube of Michael Harding Prussian Blue that I've been meaning to try - it seems to have a tiny bit of a metallic sheen, that's to be expected with Prussian blue I suppose.

Rounding off the order is another tube of Willaimsburg French Cassel Earth ( bitumen! ), so I've got a tube to play with in both studios, and a nice big fat tube of Richeson burnt Umber Cool - this stuff is alot cheaper and I'm really happy with the quality for big areas when I'm painting rocks and things.

Cubic 27 Exhibition – Riverlands Montessori School Fundraiser

A wall with lots of paintings of cupcakesI've finally managed to upload a couple shots from the opening night of the Riverlands Montessori Schools' "Cubic 27" exhibition, that was on the 27th of September. Hard to get a shot of all my paintings up on the wall, but they looked great hanging together finally!

The opening night was a blast, over 200 people viewing the work, then everyone waited outside until the bell was rung and they all rushed in and grabbed the paintings they wanted !
It was great to watch, an absolute frenzy of art-buying, everyone had a great time.

Fremantle night scene

A recently completed night street scene of the main cappucino strip in Fremantle, the lovely little port city where I currently have my art studio:

A painting of Market street in Fremantle at night

'Market street at night'

40x60cm, oil on linen

Here's some progress shots, so many hours go into these street scenes and after all the layering and detail I never really know if it's finished - I can always add more people, more detail, more interest but have to learn when to stop with a painting and move on to the next one!
